Pregnancy brings significant changes – both physically and mentally. So it’s completely natural to wonder whether exercising is really safe and what your body is actually capable of.
The good news is that exercise during pregnancy is both safe and recommended for most women. In fact, regular physical activity can have many positive effects – both for you as a mother and for your growing baby.
The most important thing to remember, however, is that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to exercise during pregnancy. We all have different experiences, different pregnancies, and different bodies. That’s why your training should always be adapted to your individual needs and circumstances.
I have personally exercised throughout three pregnancies, and no two have been exactly the same. During some periods, my body has felt strong and full of energy, while others have felt much more challenging. It has taught me that the most important thing isn’t to follow a training plan to the letter – but to listen to your body and adjust your training based on how you feel that day.
❤️ It’s never too late to start
A common misconception is that you shouldn’t start exercising if you weren’t already active before pregnancy.
That’s not true.
Research shows that even women who were relatively inactive before pregnancy can benefit greatly from becoming more active. However, your training should always be adapted to your previous experience and current fitness level.
If you’ve never done strength training before, pregnancy may not be the right time to start lifting heavy barbells or learning advanced exercises. But that doesn’t mean you can’t exercise.
For example, you can start with:
🚶♀️ Walking
💪 Light strength training with dumbbells
🟡 Resistance bands
🧘♀️ Mobility exercises
❤️ Core and pelvic floor exercises
Remember: all movement counts.
🏋️♀️ Did You Exercise Before Pregnancy?
If you were already exercising before becoming pregnant, there are often good opportunities to continue, with some adjustments as your body changes.
Many women can continue strength training throughout pregnancy. For some, this may only require minor adjustments, while others may need to make bigger changes depending on how their body feels.
What matters most isn’t how much weight you lift.
What matters is that you:
listen to your body
use good technique
adjust the load when needed
avoid pushing through pain
There’s no medal for lifting the heaviest weights during pregnancy.
The goal is to feel good – both during pregnancy and after giving birth.
💛 The Benefits of Exercising During Pregnancy
Regular exercise can have many positive effects.
💪 Less Back and Pelvic Pain
As your belly grows, your posture changes and the load on your body increases.
Stronger muscles can help your body manage these changes, and many women experience less discomfort when they continue to stay active.
⚡ More Energy
It might sound contradictory that exercise can give you more energy when you’re already tired.
But regular physical activity improves circulation, and many pregnant women find that staying active helps them feel more energetic in everyday life.
😴 Better Sleep
Sleep often becomes more challenging during pregnancy.
Physical activity can contribute to better sleep quality and make it easier to relax and wind down.
❤️ Reduced Risk of Gestational Diabetes
Research shows that regular physical activity may reduce the risk of developing gestational diabetes.
🩺 Reduced Risk of High Blood Pressure
Exercise may also support healthy blood pressure and cardiovascular health during pregnancy.
😊 Better Mental Well-Being
Pregnancy brings significant hormonal changes.
Exercise can help reduce stress, improve your mood, and contribute to an overall sense of well-being.
💙 Better Conditions for Recovery
While no one can guarantee what postpartum recovery will look like, research and experience suggest that maintaining strength and physical activity during pregnancy can provide a good foundation for recovery after giving birth.
👶 Exercise Benefits Your Baby Too
For many years, research primarily focused on the positive effects exercise has on the mother.
In recent years, researchers have also found that physical activity during pregnancy may have positive effects on the baby.
Studies suggest that exercise may contribute to:
❤️ Healthy development of the heart and blood vessels.
🫁 Improved oxygen supply.
🧠 Positive effects on brain development.
⚖️ A reduced risk of excessively high birth weight.
Research in this area is still developing, but the findings are promising and suggest that staying active during pregnancy can benefit both mother and baby.
🚩 When Should You Stop Exercising?
Although exercise is recommended for most pregnant women, there are situations where you should stop. If you experience any discomfort or pain while exercising, stop your workout.
If your pregnancy involves specific medical risks or complications, always follow the recommendations of your midwife or doctor.
🌸 You Don’t Have to Exercise Perfectly
It’s easy to feel pressured when you see other pregnant women exercising on social media. But remember that you’re only seeing a small part of their reality.
Some women can continue lifting heavy weights right up until giving birth. Others may feel nauseous for months or have a pregnancy that makes even going for a walk difficult. Both experiences are completely normal.
So don’t compare your pregnancy to someone else’s.
Instead, focus on what feels good for your body.
💛 My Tips
Try to remember that something is always better than nothing.
You don’t need to exercise five days a week to experience the benefits.
A walk counts.
A short strength workout counts.
Ten minutes with resistance bands counts.
The most important thing isn’t to exercise perfectly – it’s to keep your body moving in a way that works for you and your individual circumstances.
Never compare yourself to anyone else – every pregnancy is different!
